Department of English

The Department of English was established in the year 1997 since the inception of the college. English being a highly acclaimed link language invites special interest of the young and the promising students from all over the country. It is a well known fact that the rich tradition of English literature has influenced the literaturesof the world. With this view in mind M.A. course was introduced in the department in 2002.

The Department of English covers, enriches and reinforces the rich heritage offered by literature, facilitate ideas that provoke, produce and nurture critical as well as creative thinking, develops inherent values and builds an emotional and intellectual connectivity between the studentsand thesociety. The curriculum for both UG and PG programmes develop rich talents in students, offers industrial environment and is relevant, connecting to every aspect of society. A dynamic environment coupled with a meaningful stress on all-round educational effectiveness facilitates an attitude that lays emphasis on moral, social and intellectual ethics.

Department of English SSMV and Perfect Communication New Civic Centre, Bhilai jointly organized a Guest Lecture on the topic of ‘Perfect Communications and Soft Skills’, Smt. Diksha Singh, Director, Perfect Communication presented her lecture explaining them how to present themselves during Personal Interviews, Group Discussion and also how to develop their personalities. 100 students participated in the programme from different streams. Two days workshop was organized in Shri Shankaracharya Mahavidyalaya Junwani, Bhilai for all the academic and non-academic staff. The workshop was organized to describe the benefits of the English Language Lab and how it can be useful for the staff members also in day to day working. The workshop was taken by Ms. Neeta Sharma and Ms. Sushma Dubey of Education Department. In this workshop they explained the following points:

  • Language Lab is an audio-visual lab in which all can learn
  • Learners can record their voice and play back the recordings, interact with each other and the teacher, and also store results
  • Self-access for independent learning which includes access to resources outside class
  • Vocabulary can be improved with the help of Language Lab.

The purpose of a language lab is to involve students to actively participate in language learning exercises and get them to practice more than otherwise possible in a traditional classroom environment. All the staff members actively participated in the workshop thanks was given by Asst. Prof. Mrs. Neeta Sharma of English Department.

Department of English in collaboration with AMOHA Education Pvt. Ltd., East Area Kolkata (VETA English Classes) organized conference on “Communicating Art – Importance & Work Expertise”. Trainer Mr.Kaushik from VETA gave very interesting presentation over the topic. They covered the topic like debate, role play, word vocabulary, conversation and self introduction. AGM Mr. Palash Sarkhel, VETA East Territory Manager Mr. Harinder Singh and Centre Head of Bhilai Branch Shri Keshav Thakur were present. To make this program a success Addl. Director Dr. J Durga Prasad Rao, Principal Dr. Raksha Singh, English Department HOD Dr. Rahul Mene, Mrs. Neeta Sharma, Ms. Shreya Paul played an important role college were present during the program.

Name of the Activity: - INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY Event Date: - 08-03-2021 On the occasion of International Women’s Day English department of SSMV celebrated it. Students shared their views on most influential woman in their life, videos were shared on Ms Kiran Bedi and Manisha Koirala, journey from top of her career and her journey of cancer how she overcame with her strong will power.

Name of the Activity: - HAIKU POETRY DAY Event Date: - 17-04-2021 A Haiku is an ancient form of Japanese poetry, revolves around nature, it is about the seasons and about the epitome of nature . History of Haiku poetry , examples of Haiku poetry and significance of Haiku poetry were explained to MA students. Ms. Bhawna Sharma of 1st semester recited the poem based on Haiku poetry .

Name of the Activity :- WORLD HERITAGE DAY Event Date :- 21st April 2021 The significance of the day is to bring awareness to important cultural monuments and sites. Hindi and English Departments of the college celebrated this day with the students of college on the virtual platform. Dr Archana Jha HOD of Hindi Department briefed the students about 'The World Heritage Day.' Students shared their views regarding the famous monuments of Chhattisgarh. Name of the Activity :- 159th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore Event Date: - 7th MAY 2021 While keeping in mind his contributions, the English department paid tribute to great poet, novelist, short-story writer, playwright and celebrated painter through virtual discussion by B.A. and M.A. English students of the college. Students of MA English *Ms* Bhawna Sharma, *Ms Sujata*, *Mr. Umesh, Ms Sripada and others have recited popular poems of Rabindranath Tagore’s celebrated work ‘Gitanjali’

Name of the Activity: - Virtual Certificate Program (Soft Skill Development Program) Event Date: - 01/12/2020 to 15/12/2020 The department of English organized online soft skill development certificate program for 15 days. The program was on the theme “ How to develop your confidence in pandemic”.

Name of the Activity: - International Translation Day Event Date: - 30-10-2021 No. of Participant: - 25 The significance of the program was a great platform to highlight the importance of translators and importance of translation work which is increasing rapidly. English literature students of both U.G. and P.G. were actively participated. They celebrated this day by translating their thoughts and feelings from their mother tongue into English.

Name of the Activity: - One Day Workshop (How to create a C.V.) Event Date: - 09-12-2021 No. of Participant: - 138 In this workshop, students were taught how to prepare curriculum Vitae that will help them to jumpstart their career. Importance of making C.V. was also told to the students.

Name of the Activity: - Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, “National Youth Day” Event Date: - 12/01/2022 No. of Participant: - 50 On this occasion English Department conducted a Paragraph writing competition on blended mode. The topic was “Arise awake! Stop not until the goal is reached.” The UG students of the college who were on the online mode submitted their paragraphs on email I’d of English Department.

Name of the Activity- International Mother Language Day Event Date- 21st February 2022 English Department of Shri Shankaracharya Mahavidyalaya Bhilai celebrated 23rd International Mother Language Day on 21st February 2022, which is a worldwide annual observance held every year since 1999 to promote awareness of Linguistic diversity and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism.

Name of the Activity-World Poetry Day Event Date-21 March 2022 The Motto behind this is to aware the students about the situation of poetry in present scenario . In this occasion, student wrote poetry of their favorite poet.
